West Bengal: Dead Body of Female Student Found During SFI Programme at Jadavpur University

A  third-year student of the English department namely Anamika Mandal was found unconscious inside the Jadavpur university campus. Later when she was rushed, to the hospital she was declared dead.

She was found onThursday night floating in a lake inside the campus. She was discovered near the Arts Faculty Student’s Union(AFSU) room.

Apparently the tragedy occured during a cultural programme organized by JU’s Drama Club which eas underway near Gate No 4 of the campus. Folk Singer Gour Das Baul and his group were performing.

At around 10:20 pm, some attendees spotted someone floating in the pond close to the student union room.

Students rushed and pulled out Anamika out of the water and attempted CPR before she was rushed to the hospital. Many witness says that the loud music and crowd gathering during the performance may have drowned any cries for help. As per reports police claimed that debris was found in the water yet the circumstances of her fall remain unclear.

Trinamool Chhatra Parishad(TMCP), which is the student’s unit of the ruling party, has questioned to the authorities why the cultural event was allowed to continue till night, and asked for CCTV footage.

According to a university officials, she had been chatting with classmates near the water body near before the tragic incident although the exact situation remains unclear.

According to a report from TV9 Bangla, Anamika’s some friends claimed she had attempted to die by suicide and had supposedly consumed a large quantity of sleeping pills before being found dead though the real circumstances are unclear.

As the student died under unknown situations, the authorities neither disclosed her identity nor made any official statement till 11:45 PM

This incident happened after two years of the incident in 2023 where a first-year 17-year old student was found dead inside the JU boys main hostel. The student was suspected to be a victim of ragging which led to his fall from the top floor of hostel building.
