Sharda University Student Suicide Case Raises Alarming Questions on Mental Health and Accountability

Greater Noida has once again been shaken by a tragic incident at Sharda University after a 24-year-old former student was found dead in a private hostel near the campus. The deceased, originally from Purnia district in Bihar, had previously been enrolled in a BTech program but had not been attending classes for the past two years. On August 16, 2025, he was discovered hanging in his room, leaving behind a suicide note that pointed to “severe mental stress” as the cause of his decision.

The Incident

According to police reports, the student’s note mentioned that he had been under immense mental pressure, largely due to multiple academic backlogs. The note clarified that no individual was directly responsible for his death, but his struggles with academic failure had deeply disheartened him. The note also revealed that he had contemplated the act for over a year, requesting that the university refund his unused fees.

Investigation and Police Action

Station House Officer Sarvesh Singh confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. He added that the suicide note’s contents clearly stated that no other person was responsible, which is why an FIR has not been filed against any individual so far. The police have assured that all angles will be probed thoroughly before arriving at a final conclusion.

University’s Stand

In response to the tragedy, Sharda University clarified that the victim was not an active student of the institution at the time of his death. Dr. Ajit Kumar, Director (Public Relations), explained that the student had not attended classes for the past two years and had failed to respond to repeated university emails that urged him to either rejoin or formally withdraw from the course. The university has constituted a high-level committee to investigate the matter and has promised that strict action will be taken if anyone is found responsible.

Previous Case Adds to Concerns

This is the second suicide connected to Sharda University within a short span, further intensifying concerns about student well-being. In July 2025, a second-year BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) student also died by suicide, allegedly due to harassment by faculty members. The student’s father accused university officials of mishandling the situation, claiming that her body was taken down and shifted to Sharda Hospital without immediately informing the police or family. Following the incident, two professors, Shairy Vashisht and Mahinder Singh Chauhan, were arrested and suspended by the university.

Mental Health in Focus

The back-to-back cases have sparked a larger conversation about the mounting academic pressure faced by students and the role of educational institutions in supporting their mental health. While the latest suicide note highlights personal struggles with stress and academic backlog, the recurrence of such incidents raises questions about the overall institutional environment. Experts have emphasized the need for robust counseling systems, peer support groups, and greater sensitivity among faculty members to detect early signs of distress.

The Way Forward

As the investigation continues, the case underscores the urgent necessity for universities across the country to prioritize mental health support alongside academics. While Sharda University has assured that strict measures will follow after the committee’s findings, parents and students are demanding stronger accountability mechanisms to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.

The Sharda University student suicide cases serve as a grim reminder that academic excellence cannot come at the cost of student well-being. Without systemic reforms and proactive mental health interventions, such incidents may continue to haunt India’s education system.
