As the Election Commission of India (ECI) intensifies its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across Bihar, political tensions are escalating. Leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have approached the Supreme Court, alleging the move is politically motivated and risks disenfranchising legitimate voters.
Manoj Jha Files Petition Against ECI’s Directive
RJD MP Manoj Jha filed a petition opposing the ECI’s decision to implement the SIR just months before the state elections. The ECI reported that over 1.69 crore forms have been collected, representing 21.46% of Bihar’s 7.90 crore voters, with data uploading in progress.
CEC Acknowledges Discontent Over Electoral Rolls
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar revealed that more than 5,000 meetings with political party representatives had taken place in recent months, stating, “No one was satisfied with the current status of electoral rolls.”
Mahua Moitra Slams ECI’s “Machiavellian Plan”
TMC MP Mahua Moitra accused the ECI of orchestrating a targeted move to disenfranchise young and vulnerable voters in Bihar, with future plans allegedly aimed at West Bengal. She argued the move violates constitutional rights and the Representation of People Act.
Civil Society Joins the Legal Challenge
Groups like PUCL and the Association of Democratic Reforms, alongside activist Yogendra Yadav, have also challenged the ECI’s decision. The ECI insists the revision is necessary to account for demographic shifts, migrations, and electoral integrity.
