Odisha witnessed a statewide bandh on July 17 in response to the shocking death of Soumyashree Bisi, a 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore. The student tragically set herself on fire inside the college premises, allegedly after being subjected to sexual harassment by a professor and being met with inaction from the college administration.
Massive Protests and Shutdowns Across the State
The bandh was jointly called by eight opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, in a show of solidarity and anger over the incident. The call for the bandh received widespread support from citizens, students, and civil society groups.
Public and private bus services were suspended across major cities, bringing public transport to a halt. Several shops, markets, and local businesses voluntarily closed down. Some educational institutions also remained shut in view of the tension and potential unrest. The impact was especially visible in Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Sambalpur.
Demand for Justice and Accountability
The heart-wrenching nature of the incident has triggered an outcry for justice. Protesters have demanded the immediate arrest of the accused professor, as well as disciplinary action against members of the college administration who allegedly ignored the student’s complaints.
In response to mounting pressure, the Odisha government has announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh for Soumyashree’s family. Additionally, it has ordered a judicial inquiry, to be led by a sitting judge of the Orissa High Court, into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Government’s Official Stand
While the state government has promised a thorough and time-bound investigation, protest leaders and opposition parties remain unconvinced. They argue that previous cases of harassment have also been brushed aside and are calling for structural changes in the education system to ensure student safety.
The government’s promise of justice is now under intense public scrutiny, especially with the growing momentum of the protest and public outrage.
Daily Life Severely Affected
The bandh caused significant disruptions across Odisha. Offices saw poor attendance, roads remained deserted, and the closure of commercial establishments paralyzed normal life in many cities. While essential services like hospitals, pharmacies, and fuel stations were kept operational, people struggled to access public transport and daily essentials.
Spotlight on Harassment and Institutional Apathy
Soumyashree’s tragic death has brought to the forefront the deep-rooted issues of harassment in educational institutions and the apathy of authorities. The bandh, though disruptive, has succeeded in bringing national attention to the issue and forcing the state to act.
As the judicial inquiry proceeds, the people of Odisha—and indeed, the entire nation—await swift justice. The case is no longer just about one student, but about ensuring that campuses remain safe and responsive environments for all.
