Kolkata Water-Logged Condition Just Before Durga Puja

Kolkata fully over-logged after a night of prolonged rain due to cloudburst.After a long time Kolkata has witnessed this amount of rainfall.According to the recent reports , at least five people have died due to electrocution and the numbers are increasing.The deaths in separate incidents have occurred in Beniapukur, Kalikapur, Netaji Nagar, Gariahat and Ekbalpur as reported by NDTV.

The severe showers led to knee-deep waterlogging in several areas and the announcement of school closure along with exam cancellations at the last minute on Tuesday morning.Metro and train services have also been cancelled.

Visuals from across the city showed submerged roads and parked vehicles as the day began.Videos are being circulating on Whatsapp and other platforms which catured water-entering homes,leaving many residents ankle-deep in water.

According to the Times Of India,airlines have also issued travel advisiories following warnings from the India Meterological Department(IMD)of continued heavy rainfall in several south Bengal districts.The southern and eastern parts of the city received the heaviest rainfall,with Garia Kadamhari recording 332mm in a matter of few hours,followed by Jodhpur Park at 285mm,Kalighat at 280mm,Topsia at 275 mm, Ballyguenge at 264mm,and Thanthania in north Kolkata receiving 195mm, according to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation(KMC).

The IMD said a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal is likely to move northwestwards,bringing widespread light to moderate rain with isolated heavy to very heavy showers across south Bengal districts.The IMD also warned that a fresh low-pressure area could form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25,potentially causing further rain.

The most pathetic thing is this is happening just before Durga Puja.Durga puja is one of the most important and famous puja of Kolkata-can also be called the soul of Kolkata.A lot of families like the drummers,idol makers,and lot of street shops and vendors whole year’s revenue is being generated from this puja,and this sudden downpour has already started creating issues .

A lot of pandals are under water.The big and famous pandels may rearrange all these but the small pandals are going to face major loss.The idol locatilies including Kumortuli have reported of major water-logging issues.

Kolkata Mayor and senior Trinamool Congress leader Firhad Hakim said he has never seen such waterlogging in the city.The corporation is arranging food and shelter for the affected people.The corporation has also mentioned that if it does rain anymore then it is expected that the situation will return to normal by tonight.
