The Indian Railways has announced a series of new rules and upgrades aimed at improving passenger convenience, safety, and overall travel experience. These changes, which will impact travelers across different classes, focus on stricter luggage regulations, airport-style station upgrades, and modifications in the ticketing and booking system.
One of the major changes relates to luggage rules. Passengers will now be required to weigh their baggage at electronic weighing machines installed at key railway stations. The permissible limits vary depending on the class of travel, with First AC passengers allowed up to 70 kilograms, Second AC 50 kilograms, Third AC and Sleeper Class 40 kilograms, and General Class 35 kilograms. Those carrying excess baggage will be required to pay additional charges, while bulky items that take up extra space may attract penalties regardless of their weight. These regulations will be strictly enforced at major stations including Prayagraj Junction and Kanpur Central.
Alongside the new luggage policy, Indian Railways is focusing on modernizing its stations with world-class amenities. Redeveloped stations will include spacious waiting lounges, high-speed Wi-Fi facilities, and automated ticket vending machines. To enhance passenger convenience further, retail outlets offering branded apparel, footwear, electronics, and travel essentials will also be introduced. In line with stricter security measures, access to platforms will be allowed only to passengers with valid train tickets, while non-travelers will need to purchase a platform ticket.
Changes have also been made in the ticketing and booking system. The advance reservation period for tickets has been revised from 120 days to 60 days, a move that aims to make the booking process more efficient. In addition, the IRCTC’s Vikalp Scheme will provide much-needed relief for passengers with waitlisted tickets by offering confirmed seats on alternative trains along the same route at no additional cost.
For passengers, these new rules bring both opportunities and responsibilities. While the redeveloped stations and modern facilities promise a more comfortable journey, the strict luggage rules mean travelers must plan their packing carefully to avoid extra charges or penalties. Overall, these measures mark a step towards providing railway passengers with an experience similar to air travel, ensuring greater efficiency, comfort, and security.
