Bhupesh Baghel Alleges Political Vendetta After ED Raids in Liquor Scam Probe

Raipur, Chhattisgarh – Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has alleged that the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at his premises are politically motivated, calling it an act of vendetta by the BJP-led central government. The ED is investigating an alleged ₹2,100 crore liquor scam that reportedly occurred during Baghel’s tenure from 2019 to 2022.

The Alleged Liquor Scam

According to the Enforcement Directorate, several liquor manufacturers and traders paid bribes in exchange for favorable treatment from the state government. The agency claims that these payments were part of a broader scam involving irregularities in liquor licensing and distribution.

Previous Raids

The ED had earlier raided Baghel’s residence on March 10, 2025, seizing documents and approximately ₹30 lakh in cash. These raids have intensified scrutiny on Baghel and his family, including his son, Chaitanya Baghel, whose properties were also searched as part of the ongoing probe.

Baghel’s Response

Bhupesh Baghel has strongly denied all allegations, terming the raids as part of a “deliberate conspiracy” to malign his reputation. He asserted that he has earned his livelihood through farming and claimed he has done nothing illegal. “These are tactics to divert public attention and harass political opponents,” Baghel said during a media interaction.

Congress Party’s Stand

The Congress party has come out in strong defense of Baghel, criticizing the BJP government for allegedly misusing central investigative agencies to silence opposition voices. Party leaders have described the raids as a “conspiracy to manage headlines” and an example of selective targeting of opposition leaders.

Investigation Status
  • The ED has conducted multiple raids linked to Baghel and his son, seizing key documents and cash.

  • The agency has yet to file formal charges as the investigation continues.

  • Baghel maintains that he will fully cooperate with the authorities and is confident that he will be cleared of any wrongdoing.

While the ED’s probe remains ongoing, the controversy has reignited debates over the alleged misuse of federal agencies for political purposes. Both Baghel and the Congress party have vowed to fight the matter politically and legally.
