Tesla Launches in India: New Era for Electric Vehicles Begins

Tesla, the American multinational automotive and clean energy company founded by Elon Musk, has officially entered the Indian market. Known globally for its cutting-edge electric cars, solar energy solutions, and energy storage systems, Tesla’s arrival marks a significant milestone in India’s transition towards sustainable mobility.

On 15 July 2025, Tesla launched its first Tesla Experience Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. Spanning 4,000 square feet, the store offers potential customers a closer look at Tesla’s technology, vehicles, and vision. This Mumbai store is just the beginning, as Tesla also plans to open a second outlet in Delhi, strengthening its presence in the Indian EV market.

Tesla is not just about luxury electric vehicles; the company also provides clean energy solutions such as solar panels, solar shingles, and energy storage products like the Powerwall for homes. The brand’s mission—to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy—is deeply embedded in its product design and market strategy.

The company’s expansion in India is expected to bring several advantages. Job creation is one major benefit, with roles like service technicians, service managers, and customer support specialists offering new employment opportunities. Moreover, collaboration possibilities are on the horizon, with speculations about a potential partnership with Tata Motors. Such a partnership could foster knowledge sharing, innovation, and growth for both companies.

Tesla’s first car to debut in India is the Model Y, a premium electric SUV. The expected price range for this model is Rs 50 to 55 lakh, though the official pricing is yet to be confirmed. Tesla’s broader product roadmap for India includes the following:

  • Tesla Model Y: ₹55–65 lakh (ex-showroom)

  • Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): ₹55–60 lakh

  • Model Y Long Range (All-Wheel Drive): ₹60–65 lakh

  • Tesla Model S: ₹1.2–1.5 crore (expected launch in 2026)

  • Tesla Model X: ₹1.5–2 crore (expected launch in 2026)

Key Features of Tesla Model Y:
  • 15.4″ touchscreen display and 8″ rear-seat entertainment screen

  • Dual-motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) in Long Range variant

  • Autopilot capability

  • All-glass panoramic roof

  • Real-world range of 466 km (RWD) to 622 km (Long Range)

Tesla’s India debut is more than just a business expansion; it symbolizes a transformative shift towards electric mobility, clean energy, and a greener future. With its innovative products and sustainability mission, Tesla is poised to lead a new era for electric vehicles in India.
