Guwahati — The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two more individuals in connection with the recovery of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted near Dispur Last Gate, Guwahati. The IED, which was discovered ahead of Independence Day 2024, was part of a larger terror plot orchestrated by the banned militant outfit ULFA (I) to carry out multiple blasts across Assam.
A Plot to Disrupt Independence Day Celebrations
According to NIA sources, the United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I), led by Paresh Baruah, had devised a plan to plant explosives in strategic locations across Guwahati with the intention of spreading fear, creating panic, and disrupting the peaceful celebrations of Independence Day. The broader objective of the conspiracy was to destabilize the region and undermine government authority.
Ongoing Investigation and Arrests
The NIA had taken over the case shortly after the IED was recovered and has since been conducting a meticulous investigation. Through a combination of intelligence gathering, evidence analysis, and targeted raids, the agency was able to trace the involvement of several individuals with direct links to ULFA (I).
The two recently arrested suspects are believed to have played active roles in planning and executing the IED placement at Dispur Last Gate. The NIA made the arrests after gathering sufficient forensic and electronic evidence. The identities of the individuals have not yet been disclosed, pending further inquiry.
Security Implications and Government Response
The arrests are seen as a significant breakthrough in preventing a potentially deadly terror attack. NIA officials stated that the action has thwarted a major threat and ensured the safety of civilians during national celebrations. The arrests also reinforce the message that any attempt to disrupt peace in Assam will be dealt with firmly.
Authorities believe the arrests will serve as a deterrent to insurgent groups seeking to destabilize the region. The public in Assam has responded positively to the NIA’s swift intervention, which has reassured citizens of the government’s commitment to security and law enforcement.
More Arrests Likely
The NIA investigation remains ongoing, and sources say further arrests are expected as the agency continues to uncover deeper layers of the conspiracy. Investigators are pursuing leads to identify and apprehend additional operatives involved in the plot.
