GST 2.0 Ushers in Major Tax Reform: Essentials Cheaper, Luxury Goods Dearer in Simplified Slab System

India has stepped into a new area of taxation with the launch of GST 2.0, effective from 22 September,2025. The new system marks one of the most significant reforms since the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax in 2017. The government has positioned this change as a way to simplify taxation , reduce disputes , and bring relief to the common man . But while some goods and services are set to become way cheaper-or even tax-free-others, especially luxury items, will now attract higher taxes .

Under the earlier system , India had four GST slabs – 5%,12%,18% and 28% . This created frequent disputes and confusions , with many items often being reclassified into different slabs over time .

According to the Times of India , a lot of household items , cars , TVs , bikes will become cheaper for the common man and middle class . Many food items have been moved to the NIL or 0% tax bracket . These include roti, parantha , paneer , khakra etc . Importantly , health and life insuranc premiums will be exempt from GST.

Healthcare has also has been prioritized in this reform . Thirty-three-life-saving medicines, medical oxygen and other critical health products are now exempt from GST easing the financial burden on patients and their families.

Everyday consumption goods such as soaps , detergents , processed food items and medicines have also seen a cut from the earlier higher slabs to either 5% or 0% . The government hopes these changes will directly benefit households , increase disposable income and fuel consumption during the upcoming festive season .

On the other hand , GST 2.0 has sharply raised taxes on luxury and other sin goods . The new 40 % slab now covers high end cars , premium clothing above specific price thresholds , luxury watches , alcoholic beverages , and tobacco products . Sugary aerated drinks too fail in this category , in the line with public health concerns .

GST 2.0 is expected to give a short-term boost to consumption , especially in the healthcare sectors . Reduced taxes on essentials may help fight inflation and give the middle class some relief . At the same time , the higher taxes on luxury items aim to balance revenues and promote responsible consumption.

As per now , GST 2.0 represents a bold shift towards simplification , fairness and consumer relief . The government hopes the reforms will win both economic and political dividends .
