Bus Accident in Gondia Claims 12 Lives, 15 Injured; PM Modi Expresses Condolences

A tragic bus accident in Gondia, Maharashtra, claimed the lives of 12 people, including seven women, and left 15 others injured, some critically, on Friday. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM on the Gondia-Kohmara Road near Khajri village, when a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) Shivshahi bus, en route from Nagpur to Gondia and Bhandara, attempted to overtake a truck on a curve. As the driver swerved to avoid hitting a motorcycle that appeared suddenly, the bus lost control and flipped over.

Eyewitnesses reported that local villagers immediately rushed to the scene, smashing windows to rescue trapped passengers. Twelve bodies were recovered from the wreckage, while the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. Maharashtra’s Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also promised ₹10 lakh for the victims’ families and directed authorities to provide all necessary medical assistance.

Among the victims were Rajesh and Mangala Lanjewar, Ramchandra and Anjira Kanojia, Azhar Ali and Arifa Syed, and Kalpana Wankhede. Further investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
